HerSpace: Why Women’s Only Matters for Recovery
If you’ve ever changed in front of a mirror at a public pool or gym and felt the weight of being looked at, or hesitated before getting into cold water in front of strangers, or felt the need to make yourself smaller in a shared space, you already understand why HerSpace exists.
We run women’s only sessions at Sauna & Plunge Co., and it’s not about keeping anyone out. It’s about creating the conditions where recovery actually works, especially for women, because the science and the simple human reality tell us that safety and privacy matter more than people usually admit.
The science of women and cold
You might have noticed we offer a 12°C plunge alongside the 6°C and 3°C. That’s based on emerging research suggesting women’s cold exposure response benefits from slightly warmer water than men’s, and we mean it. But the research goes deeper than temperature preferences.
Studies increasingly show that women’s stress response to cold water is different. It’s not weaker, it’s different, and that matters. Women often need different entry points, different pacing, and a different approach to building cold tolerance. That’s not a limitation, it’s just biology. And it means an environment built without that in mind is built for one group only.
The reality of changing and privacy
There’s something that doesn’t make it into most recovery conversations but absolutely should. A sauna or cold plunge is a vulnerable state. You’re wet, partially clothed, coming down from a shock to your system. For a lot of women, doing that around men means you’re managing the male gaze on top of managing the cold.
It’s an invisible tax on recovery. You’re not focusing on your breathing, you’re thinking about how you look. You’re not settling into the cold, you’re thinking about privacy. You’re not resetting, you’re managing.
Women’s only sessions remove that tax. It’s not paranoia and it’s not oversensitive. It’s the actual conditions required for recovery to work.
HerSpace isn’t about exclusion
We don’t run women’s only sessions be cause men aren’t welcome. We run them because some people recover better when they’re not managing the social dynamics of a shared space. Full stop. Everyone else can come during mixed sessions, and plenty do.
The research backs this up. Studies on wellness spaces show that women in single sex environments report higher comfort, higher return rates, and better actual recovery outcomes. That’s not anecdotal, that’s measurable.
How it changes the experience
In a women’s only session, everything shifts. Women ask questions they wouldn’t ask in front of men. They push themselves further into the cold because they’re not worried about looking a certain way. They stay longer in the sauna because they’re not thinking about being watched. They change without a second thought. They recover.
The studio sessions run the same way. Breathwork, yoga, Pilates and sound in a women only environment means you’re not performing recovery, you’re actually doing it.
It’s not about hating mixed spaces
Plenty of people prefer mixed spaces and get excellent recovery from them. That’s fine. But pretending that gender doesn’t change how vulnerable you feel is pretending that women’s actual lived experience doesn’t matter.
HerSpace is an acknowledgement that it does.
